Street Lighting Columns

Street lights have been around since ancient times. In the earliest cities, there are archaeological evidences to show that roads, paths and public spaces were lit to provide safety for those who used them and as a deterrent against thieves and criminals. Since the advent of electricity, street lighting has been one of the biggest advantages for residential, commercial and public spaces and the best sign of a good city administration.

Efficient use of street lighting has provided solid evidence of reduction of injuries and accidents by road users. Automobile crashes are greatly reduced when there is good street lighting especially in cases of pedestrian fatalities. Well-lit intersections and motorway change points with brightly lit signage allow drivers to make navigation decisions more efficiently and quickly. Lamp-posts also provide decorative elements in heritage locations and can be used by different agencies to promote or advertise their products.

Using a raised column to provide light has moved from the early oil-lamps and candles, to gas lamps, lanterns and arc lights, incandescent bulbs and finally today to high-intensity discharge lamps often powered by solar or wind power. The quality of lighting has also evolved from the early spooky-looking gas-lights, the harsh and relentless glare of arc lights to the softer and yet more effective lighting of today's street lights.

The different types of street lighting columns include beacon lights with or without reflectors that can guide drivers and pedestrians and motorway lighting which is placed along the curbs in a continuous line so that drivers don't shift from dark to well-lit areas abruptly. Both types require the use of mounted light sources which are placed on tall columns. Materials used for street lighting columns are either steel or aluminum, since they're both poor conductors of electricity and are therefore safe to use outdoors and in unsupervised conditions. Steel and aluminum are sturdy and durable, weather-proof and can be maintained well with adequate and regular painting or coating of suitable paints.

Some of the problems associated with street lighting columns are that they need to be regularly inspected for signs of rust, weathering, leakage of power and stability. In conditions of harsh weather or high winds, they can pose a risk to pedestrians and motorists and also to buildings and properties nearby. Environmentalists frequently complain that twenty-four hour street lighting causes light pollution and interferes with the diurnal rhythm of trees, plants, nocturnal birds and animals. Most city or village administrations are working at reducing the power consumption expenses involved in street lighting and the addition of solar panels, wind power systems etc to street lighting columns is being followed.
